Hilary A. Sefton is a partner at Sefton Kelly Family Law, where she helps clients navigate divorce and family law matters with steady guidance, practical communication, and a grounded approach during difficult transitions. She understands that family law cases impact every part of a client’s life, including their children, finances, schedules, and future decisions. Her approach focuses on helping clients feel informed, supported, and prepared with workable next steps as they move through an often uncertain process.

Hilary represents clients in matters involving divorce, parenting issues, child support, post-decree disputes, surrogacy agreements, and adoptions. Drawing on years of experience in family law, she is known for her calm demeanor, thoughtful communication style, and ability to guide clients through complex situations without losing sight of the bigger picture. Clients appreciate Hilary’s ability to explain complex legal matters clearly, set realistic expectations, and guide them through difficult decisions with honesty and care.

Hilary discovered her passion for family law while attending a course taught by longtime family law attorney Danya A. Grunyk at John Marshall Law School. After graduation, she joined Danya’s firm and continued building her career representing families through complex and deeply personal transitions. Hilary assumed leadership of the firm in 2020 and later co-founded Sefton Kelly Family Law alongside Vicki Kelly. Today, she remains committed to helping clients move forward with clarity, confidence, and a workable plan for what comes next.

In addition to her legal practice, Hilary is actively involved in her community through charitable organizations, fundraising initiatives, and volunteer work supporting children, families, and healthcare causes. She previously served on the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Board and was also involved with the Infant Welfare Society, which provides healthcare and resources for underserved women and children in the Chicago area.

Beyond her legal practice, Hilary’s greatest priority is her family and raising her two children. As the parent of active teens, she understands firsthand the realities of balancing busy schedules, extracurricular activities, parenting responsibilities, and everyday family life.

Hilary grew up in Michigan and remains close with her extended family there. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and received her Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School. She is a member of several local bar associations, has served on various committees for the DuPage County Bar Association, and has spoken at professional education events for fellow attorneys throughout her career.

Hilary has been recognized by Super Lawyers magazine as a “Rising Star” attorney from 2012–2019 and was selected to the Illinois Super Lawyers list from 2020–2026. She was also selected as a candidate for the America’s Most Honored Professionals distinction multiple years between 2014–2026 and has been recognized by Chicago magazine as one of Illinois’ top lawyers in family law.
